Even today one can barely explain how such a beautiful pearl occurs in a shell. It is hardly surprising that so many legends have originated. The Persians believed that the pearls are the tears of their god’s. Other cultures thought that the growth of a pearl in a shell was brought about by the moonlight and dew.
An old Chinese fairy tale tells how the pearl was born:
As the first drop of rain fell onto the ocean it was overrun by the enormous waves. Because it was so small it called: „I am so unimpressive in this large area“. The ocean replied: „Small water drop, your modesty dignifies you; therefore you should be rewarded in return. I will turn you into a drop of light. You will be the purest of all jewels, the queen among all and you will have power over womankind“.
This is how the pearl was born.
