Red remembrance poppies are frequently displayed in Anglo-Saxon culture to commemorate fallen soldiers and service personel.
The custom originated in 1921 after humanitarian Moina Michael lobbied to have the poppy officially recognized as the symbol of remembrance for veterans. She was inspired by John McCrae’s poem «In Flanders Fields» which he wrote in 1915 during World War I. Remembrance Day is commonly celebrated on November 11.
