In honor of the American Gold Eagles' 35th anniversary, new designs will be introduced in mid-year 2021, creating a highly sought-after inaugural issue of these popular coins. Jennie Norris designed the reverse, which features a bold close-up portrait of an eagle. This is the first new design to be introduced since the series' inception in 1986. Obverse: Based on Augustus Saint-Gaudens' famous Gold Double Eagle design, which depicts Lady Liberty with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The Type 2 design incorporates additional details from the original bronze cast to enhance this well-known design.
