This year's release of our Evolution of Life series is a salamander-like Diplocaulus that lived around 250 – 300 million years ago.
As a water dweller with a size of 0.5 – 1.0 meters, this fossil lived on small fish and tadpoles. The Diplocaulus probably used its flattened tail and eye-catching boomerang-shaped skull to create an uplift from the seabed when a prey was detected.
